Best Time to Visit Costa Brava for Tennis and Padel

Most people asking this already know Spain means sun. What they actually want to know is whether July is too hot to play four hours a day, or whether October's worth the trip once summer's over. Short answer: there's a real sweet spot, and it's not the month everyone assumes.

The actual numbers

Costa Brava runs a Mediterranean climate, hot summers, mild winters. January is the coldest month, averaging around 8°C (46°F). July is the hottest, averaging around 24°C (74°F). Sea temperature peaks in August at roughly 26°C (79°F), if you're planning to cool off between sessions. October's the wettest month, averaging about 82mm of rain, and August gets the most daily sunshine, around 11 hours.

None of that's a guess, it's from published climate averages for the region, not a seasonal vibe check.

Why we don't push peak summer

July and August look like the obvious answer, and they're not wrong exactly, but a full day of coaching in 30°C-plus heat with high humidity off the coast is a different experience than four hours of relaxed beach time. Courts get booked out, coaching sessions often shift to early morning and evening to avoid the worst of it, and the coastline itself gets considerably busier with the broader summer tourist season.

The shoulder season is the actual answer

Late May through June, and September into early October, get you reliably warm days without the peak-summer crush. Full-day coaching is realistic without working around the heat, the coast is noticeably quieter, and accommodation tends to have more availability. This is our own read based on running retreats through the year, not a universal rule, if you specifically want the highest-energy, most social version of the coast, peak summer still has that.

What this means for booking

If your priority is coaching quality and comfortable long days on court, aim for late spring or early autumn. If you want the beach-town-at-full-volume experience and don't mind adjusting session times around the heat, summer still works, just expect it. Either way, both are viable, this isn't a "never go in summer" argument, it's a "know what you're optimizing for" one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Costa Brava too hot to play tennis in summer?

Not unplayable, but a full day of coaching in peak July or August heat is harder than in shoulder season. Sessions often shift earlier or later in the day to work around it.

What's the best month for a tennis or padel trip to Costa Brava?

Late May through June, or September into early October. Warm, reliable weather without peak-summer crowds or heat.

When is the sea warm enough to swim between sessions?

Sea temperature peaks around August at roughly 26°C (79°F), but it's comfortably swimmable from June through September.

Is there a rainy season to avoid?

October is the wettest month on average, though rain in the region is generally short and heavy rather than prolonged, not a reason on its own to avoid autumn.

Does the season affect pricing?

Ask us directly about your specific dates, availability and accommodation options can shift with season and demand.
